Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has commended traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria for their pivotal role in supporting security initiatives across the region.
Delivering a goodwill message at the 7th meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Committee in Maiduguri, Borno State, Governor Yahaya—represented by his Deputy, Dr. Manasseh Daniel Jatau—described insecurity as a major barrier to agriculture and development. He urged traditional rulers and regional stakeholders to re-evaluate their roles and collaborate more closely with security agencies and communities.
“Insecurity is no longer the sole responsibility of law enforcement. It is a collective duty involving traditional leaders, community heads, and citizens,” Yahaya stated.
He endorsed the meeting’s theme, “Enhanced Security as a Panacea for Stability and Development of the North,” as timely and essential for restoring peace and economic stability in the region.
Governor Yahaya also advocated for improved grassroots intelligence gathering, information sharing, and better community engagement, including support for ward heads and the adoption of a “Know Your Citizens” strategy.
The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, in his remarks, emphasised the importance of unity and collaborative solutions to address the region’s persistent security challenges.
The meeting, the first to be held in Maiduguri, was formally declared open by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, represented by Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum. He described the theme as both relevant and urgent, highlighting the link between security and development.
