The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, has said that acts of betrayal among Nigerians are a major obstacle to the country’s development.
Speaking on Sunday in Kaduna after an Easter service, Hayab delivered a message titled “Overcoming Betrayal at Easter”, in which he lamented the widespread lack of trust and loyalty among citizens and institutions.
He said betrayal is affecting every facet of national life, including the country’s fight against insecurity.
“The security agencies cannot succeed in their efforts to combat banditry because of betrayals from within,” he said. “There are people who leak information to the criminals, undermining efforts to end killings, cattle rustling, and the destruction of property worth billions of naira.”
Citing the biblical account of Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus, Hayab warned that those who betray trust and responsibilities often end in disgrace or ruin.
“Anyone who betrays the trust of another person, community, state or country does not end well,” he said. “Those entrusted with responsibilities who fail to act faithfully have betrayed that trust.”
He added that faithfulness in leadership and service is critical to national unity and peace.
“If this country entrusts you with a role, you are expected to be faithful. Mismanagement of resources or authority is a betrayal of that trust,” he said.
Hayab also called on Nigerians to support security agencies and work collectively to secure the nation.
“We must stop destroying one another. We should work together with security agencies to keep Nigeria safe and united,” he added.
