Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the first pontiff from Latin America, has died at the age of 88.
The Vatican confirmed that the Pope passed away peacefully at 7:35 AM local time in his residence at the Domus Sanctae Marthae in Vatican City. His death follows months of deteriorating health, including a recent battle with double pneumonia.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, became pope in March 2013 and served for over 12 years. Known for his humble demeanor, progressive stance on social issues, and focus on compassion and inclusivity, he was widely regarded as a transformative figure in the modern Church.
His final public appearance took place on Easter Sunday, April 20, when he briefly addressed crowds from a balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square.
Funeral arrangements have been announced, with the Pope to lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica beginning Wednesday, April 23. The funeral is expected to be held within six days, in accordance with Vatican protocols. In a departure from tradition, Pope Francis will be laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
Tributes have poured in from world leaders and religious figures across the globe, including the Dalai Lama, Patriarch Bartholomew, King Charles, President Emmanuel Macron, and former U.S. President Donald Trump, all honoring his legacy of peace, humility, and social justice.
The Vatican has confirmed that preparations are underway for the papal conclave, which will begin in early May to elect the 267th pope.
