Fombina Imprints Limited has called on students across all levels of education to cultivate and sustain a reading culture to harness the transformative power of books.
Speaking at a symposium in Kano to commemorate World Book Day, the Managing Consultant of Fombina Imprints, Yunusa Zakaria Ya’u, emphasized the role of literature in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He was represented at the event by Malam Isa Garba.
Ya’u noted that books play a critical role in shaping perspectives and guiding societies toward a more enlightened and progressive future. He said the event was organized to revive the declining reading culture in Nigeria and reconnect young people with books.
“We want to revive that culture and also celebrate authors and publishers,” he said. “This appreciation can only be meaningful if people are actively reading and engaging with their works.”
He also urged students to use both physical and digital books, advising them to use mobile phones wisely by accessing educational and developmental content rather than just entertainment.
“Young people should adopt purposeful reading habits by engaging with content that addresses real-life issues around them,” he added.
The symposium, Theme: “Crisis of Standards, Decline of Reading Culture, and the Challenges of Publishing in the Digital Era: The Place of Books in the Restoration and Transformation of Our Education Sector.”
Other speakers at the event highlighted the importance of reading and publishing in promoting knowledge and national development. Some students described the event as an opportunity to rekindle their interest in reading.
World Book Day is marked annually on April 23 to celebrate books and literature, promote reading, and recognize the role of authors, illustrators, and publishers in shaping societies.
