The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of extortion leveled against officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The directive follows a viral social media post alleging that NSCDC personnel extorted the sum of N5.2 million from a group of young men traveling from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure, Ondo State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Babatunde Alao, the minister expressed strong disapproval of any form of misconduct by security personnel.
“We will not tolerate any form of misconduct from our security agencies,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “We are building a paramilitary that is disciplined, professional, and serves Nigeria and Nigerians with dignity and patriotism.”
He assured that any officer found guilty in the matter would face the full weight of the law.
“This case will not be swept under the carpet. We will ensure justice is served and reinforce the standard that our security agencies must operate with forthrightness,” the statement added.
