Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State on Tuesday flagged off the construction of a N16 billion express road and flyover project in Maiduguri, aimed at decongesting traffic and supporting the city’s urban expansion.
The project includes a 7.1-kilometre dual carriageway connecting the Borno Express Terminus to Molai along Tashan Kano, a six-span bridge across the Ngada-Bul River, and a new flyover—marking the fourth of such structures in the state.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Zulum revealed that N8 billion, representing 50% of the contract sum, had already been paid to the contractor to ensure swift execution. He stressed the importance of meeting the 10-month completion deadline, warning against delays.
“Ten months is ten months. We have paid half of the total cost upfront. There is no excuse for delay,” Zulum stated.
The governor emphasized that the road infrastructure is not merely for beautification but is a strategic response to Maiduguri’s growing population and the need for better connectivity to key economic zones.
Commissioner for Works and Housing, Mustapha Gubio, noted that the six-span bridge would provide vital access between the new road and neighboring communities, adding that the ministry would ensure strict compliance with project standards and deadlines.
In a related development, Governor Zulum also announced plans to undertake five additional capital projects: a new market, a general hospital, an orthopaedic hospital, an international hotel, and a western bypass. He pledged that all ongoing and proposed projects would be completed before the end of his administration.
Addressing the current water scarcity in Maiduguri, the governor attributed the issue to damage caused by the 2024 flooding and assured residents of urgent repairs to the affected infrastructure.
