In a sweeping and unprecedented move, the Government of India has ordered all Pakistani nationals to leave the country within 48 hours following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced the suspension of all visas issued to Pakistani citizens, including those issued under the SAARC framework. Medical visas, however, will remain valid until April 29.
The government has also undertaken a series of retaliatory actions:
Indus Waters Treaty Suspended: India has temporarily halted its obligations under the Indus Waters Treaty, a move with potentially far-reaching consequences for regional water security.
Diplomatic Fallout: All Pakistani military, naval, and air attachés stationed in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared “persona non grata.” India has also recalled its own defence attaché from Islamabad. Furthermore, Pakistan’s diplomatic staff in New Delhi must return within seven days, and India’s diplomatic presence in Pakistan will be reduced by nearly half by May 1.
The Indian government squarely blames cross-border terrorism for the Pahalgam attack, though Pakistan has denied any involvement, condemning the violence and calling for restraint.
With the situation developing rapidly, security agencies across the region remain on high alert.
