The people of Akweemam Ndola District in Ngada Chiefdom, under the Ngada Special Development Area of Taraba State, have raised alarm over what they describe as ongoing encroachment and interference by the neighboring Kungana Chiefdom.
In a press briefing held at the district headquarters in Sabongida-Duna, District Head James Maji, backed by community leaders and residents, appealed to the state government to urgently intervene and address the growing tension, which he warned could lead to conflict if left unresolved.
“The encroachment is not only illegal but also a threat to peace and stability among our people. We are calling on the government to act now by implementing the already gazetted boundary adjustments between the two chiefdoms,” Maji said.
The development follows reports that a parallel village head was installed in Garba II, one of the disputed areas, allegedly by the Kungana Chiefdom. Stakeholders from Ngada have described this move as an “act of illegality” and a direct provocation.
Responding to inquiries, the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs claimed it was unaware of the tensions between the two chiefdoms. However, the Chief of Kungana, when contacted, acknowledged the allegations and promised to respond to the matter at a later date.
The Development Council of the Ngada Special Development Area confirmed that it has formally escalated the matter to the appropriate authorities. The Council urged the Taraba State Government to swiftly resolve the boundary dispute to prevent potential unrest.
The Taraba State Government had earlier created and upgraded several chiefdoms, including Ngada, in its bid to promote peace and better governance at the grassroots.
As the situation unfolds, residents of Akweemam Ndola continue to await the government’s action to ensure lasting peace in the area.
