The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on the Nigerian government to increase its tax revenue by broadening the country’s tax base and intensifying efforts to combat tax evasion.

In its latest advisory, the IMF emphasized that enhancing tax collection is critical to strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal position and reducing its reliance on volatile oil revenues. The fund recommended improved enforcement mechanisms and more inclusive policies to bring informal sector players into the formal tax net.
The IMF’s recommendation comes amid mounting fiscal pressures and growing calls for the Nigerian government to diversify its revenue sources to sustain public spending and drive long-term economic stability.
