Kwara State – 26, 2025
A heavy rainstorm on Saturday, April 26, 2025, caused significant damage to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State. The storm, which struck around 4:30 p.m., was accompanied by violent winds that severely impacted several camp facilities, leaving widespread destruction.

Speaking to journalists, the NYSC Kwara State Coordinator, Mr. Onifade Olaoluwa Joshua, described the incident as a “devastating natural phenomenon,” but expressed relief that no lives were lost in the disaster.
“It’s a fact that a terrible rainstorm wreaked havoc at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Yikpata. It occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, 26th April, 2025. Several camp facilities were destroyed,” Onifade said.

The storm damaged critical structures, including the Administrative Block, Multipurpose Hall, Camp Mosque, the camp market, and hostel blocks housing both corps members and officials. Two vehicles belonging to camp officials were also severely damaged after a tree was uprooted by the storm and fell on them.
“A tree was uprooted and crushed two cars owned by camp officials,” Onifade confirmed.

An immediate assessment of the damage was carried out, and relevant authorities have been informed. The Kwara State Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon. Shehu Ndanusa Usman, and the Etsu of Tsaragi, HRH Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi, visited the camp to assess the damage and offer support to the NYSC community.
Despite the extensive damage, Onifade emphasized that the safety of corps members and staff remained the top priority. “We thank God — no lives were lost. The corps members are safe and well accommodated,” he stated.

NYSC management is expected to collaborate with relevant agencies to repair the affected facilities and restore normal activities at the camp in the coming days.
