The paramount ruler of the Sanwi Chiefdom in Taraba State, His Royal Highness Hainiel Banti, Kpan Sanwi I, has made a strong call for the preservation of the Yandang people’s rich cultural heritage. The monarch’s appeal came during the Sungki Yandang Festival, which took place this past weekend in Mayo-Lope Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Kpan Sanwi I highlighted the festival’s importance in showcasing the culture, traditions, values, and history of the Yandang people. In his speech, he invited people worldwide to experience the vibrant culture of the Yandang, emphasizing ecotourism and national unity as key benefits of embracing cultural heritage.
“We, the Yandang people, are known for our rich culture, hospitality, and strong educational and industrial presence. We invite the world to witness the beauty of our traditions,” said Banti. The theme of the 2025 Maiden Sungki Yandang Carnival, “Cultural Heritage: A Panacea for National Cohesion,” reflects the growing role of cultural heritage in fostering unity across communities.
Banti stressed that cultural heritage plays a crucial role in connecting people across time and space. He also underscored the importance of carnivals in promoting social integration, happiness, and tourism, which contribute to both local and global economic development.
“Cultural carnivals attract tourists and serve as a significant driver of ecotourism and economic activity,” Banti remarked.
Looking ahead, the monarch expressed excitement about expanding cultural programs, enhancing community participation, and increasing tourism-related economic activities. He also announced that the ‘Bokituka,’ a traditional cultural performance, will be performed annually at the Sanwi Chiefdom headquarters in Sayunti during the Sungki Yandang Carnival.
Banti extended his gratitude to Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas and the Taraba State Government for their ongoing support of the festival and their commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the region.
The next edition of the carnival is expected to feature more attractions and performances, promising an even larger celebration of the Yandang culture.
