The Methodist Church Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation and rising insecurity in the country, urging citizens to come together in prayer and unity as they navigate these difficult times.
This appeal was made by the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, during the 35th Annual Synod of the Diocese of Kwara, held at the Methodist Cathedral of Blessing in Ilorin, Kwara State. The Prelate was represented by the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Folorunso Osifuwa.
In his address at the synod, Rt. Rev. Osifuwa painted a grim picture of the challenges facing Nigerians, pointing to the high exchange rate, unaffordable basic necessities, and the widespread effects of corruption. He also highlighted the escalating insecurity, which he described as a daily reality for many citizens.
“Nigerians are living through very difficult times,” he said. “The exchange rate is high, basic necessities are increasingly unaffordable, and corruption continues to affect all sectors. Insecurity has become the order of the day.”
Osifuwa particularly condemned the growing wave of kidnappings across the country, which he called alarming and deeply distressing, especially for churches and their members. He attributed the rising trend of abductions to a combination of greed, poverty, unemployment, and distorted religious motives.
The Church emphasized that while global economic challenges affect many nations, Nigeria’s situation requires more than just political solutions.
“At this critical juncture, Nigeria needs the intervention of Jesus Christ,” Osifuwa said. “As people of faith, we must continue to pray for our families, the Church, and our nation.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, the Methodist Church urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and united. “We must keep praying and trusting God to provide for our needs and restore peace in our land,” Osifuwa added.
The synod brought together clergy, lay members, and church representatives for a time of spiritual reflection and to deliberate on the path forward for both the Church and the nation.
