The Nineteen Seventeen Northern Consensus Movement (NSNCM) has expressed its backing for the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, and dismissed recent calls for a vote of no confidence in his leadership as “absurd and obscene.”
In a statement issued by its National President, Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, the group emphasized that the Minister and his team can only act on security matters presented by state governments during Security Council meetings.
The NSNCM argued that security responsibilities are shared between federal and state governments, with state governors serving as the Chief Security Officers of their respective states.
The group also highlighted that certain ministries, including Defence, are solely federal responsibilities and are not replicated at the state level.
It questioned whether critics have examined all possible local-level efforts before calling for drastic actions at the federal level.
While acknowledging existing security challenges, the NSNCM stressed the importance of grassroots solutions and stronger intelligence sharing between states and federal agencies, especially in border areas.
The group praised the current federal security leadership team, stating that their appointments were steps in the right direction.
The NSNCM concluded by calling on civil society organizations to offer constructive criticism and support efforts aimed at improving national security.
