Three police officers in Bauchi State have been detained following the death of a suspect, Abubakar Auwal, who died in police custody under suspicious circumstances at a divisional headquarters in Jega.
Auwal was arrested on April 15 over alleged theft of trailer rims. Police said he collapsed in custody the next morning and was confirmed dead at the General Hospital, Jega, by 10:00 p.m.
Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, said Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, ordered a discreet investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, leading to the detention of three officers. The Divisional Police Officer of the station has also been queried and redeployed.
The command assured the public of professionalism and transparency, though the names of the detained officers were not disclosed. Investigations are ongoing.
