A hit-and-run accident has claimed the life of a young boy along the Ilorin-Ogbomosho Road, triggering widespread grief and renewed calls for improved road safety enforcement and emergency healthcare services in Kwara State.
The tragic incident occurred around 8:46 p.m. on Sunday when the boy, having disembarked from a commercial tricycle, attempted to cross the road. He was fatally struck by a speeding truck whose driver fled the scene.
An eyewitness, Marshal Alaro, who conveyed the victim to a nearby health facility, took to social media to express frustration over the lack of emergency care.
“We tried to save him, but the hospital lacked a specialist to treat his head injuries. He was only given first aid and referred to General Hospital Oke Oyi,” he posted.
He also urged the government to address gaps in healthcare delivery.
Confirming the incident, the Kwara State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mufutau Irekeola, said officials responded promptly to the distress call.
“We are working to identify the victim and track down the hit-and-run driver,” he said.
He warned motorists against reckless driving, especially at night, adding that many road accidents are preventable through adherence to traffic regulations. “Road safety is a shared responsibility,” he stressed.
The incident has prompted renewed demands from residents and advocacy groups for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, installation of speed control measures, and improvements in trauma care facilities across the state.
