In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. He becomes the first American to lead the Church in its 2,000-year history.
Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti announced the election from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica earlier today, following the appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the conclave’s decision.
Born in Chicago in 1955, Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Augustinian Order. He has served in various roles within the Church, including as the Prior General of the Augustinians, Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, and Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In 2023, he was appointed as a cardinal by Pope Francis.
In his first address as pope, Leo XIV expressed hopes for peace and continuity with the values of his predecessor, Pope Francis. He emphasized the importance of unity and compassion within the Church.
