Ogidi, Anambra State — May 8, 2025
A devastating incident occurred in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, where five siblings tragically lost their lives to suspected food poisoning.

Their mother, who also consumed the same meal, is currently in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital.

The incident unfolded on Saturday, May 3, when the children began experiencing severe stomach pains, vomiting, and other symptoms shortly after consuming a home-prepared meal.

Their father, 79-year-old retired soldier Pa Robinson Aghalu, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “They were all fine before that meal. But not long after they ate, they started falling ill, one after the other.”

Despite efforts to seek medical attention at various health facilities, including a nearby maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital, five of the six children succumbed to the illness.

The family’s only surviving child was away studying with a relative at the time of the incident.

The Anambra State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the matter.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that forensic analysis is underway, with food samples collected from the scene and the bodies of the deceased children deposited in a morgue.

“Our operatives have sealed the scene, collected food samples, and are gathering information from residents to aid the investigation,” Ikenga stated.

The Aghalu family is currently facing significant medical expenses and is in urgent need of financial support.

The Ogidi community remains in mourning, grappling with the profound loss of five young lives in a single household.
