An Edo Ekiti Magistrate Court has sentenced a 26-year-old man, Isah Mohammad, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing iron rods valued at N200,000, intended for a building project in the state capital.
The convict was arraigned on August 19, 2024, before Magistrate Olatomiwa Daramola on a one-count charge of stealing, contrary to Section 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.
According to the charge, the offence was committed on July 30, 2024, when Mohammad unlawfully took the construction materials belonging to one Adejibola Ademola. The rods were kept at a site along New Iyin Road, Ado Ekiti, for the completion of a residential building.
The prosecuting officer, Inspector Adeoye Adesegun, presented four witnesses during the trial, including the site supervisor, and tendered exhibits, such as the defendant’s confessional statement and the recovered iron rods.
In his testimony, the site supervisor, Ezekiel Akinola, told the court that the materials were stored for continued construction work after the building had reached the lintel stage, but were discovered missing on August 8, 2024. He also accused the defendant and his group of being a source of disturbance in the community.
Despite being represented by his counsel, Lanre Oluwasola, the defendant did not call any witness in his defence.
In her judgment, Magistrate Daramola held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and accordingly sentenced Mohammad to two years in prison.
