The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has received more than 200 defectors from a rival faction of the party in Takai Local Government Area of Kano State.
The defectors, formerly loyal to Senator Kawu Sumaila, were formally received into the Kwankwasiyya movement, with Kwankwaso personally presenting them with the iconic red caps associated with the group.
Addressing the new members, Kwankwaso described the Kwankwasiyya movement as a people-focused political platform rooted in social justice, inclusiveness, and development.
“I am pleased you have chosen the path that prioritises the future of Kano and the nation. The Kwankwasiyya movement is built on service to the less privileged, empowerment of women and youth, and a clear agenda for development,” he said.
He warned the defectors to be wary of what he called selfish politicians who exploit loyalists for personal gain.
“Reject their empty offers. They provide handouts without planning for your children’s future or the future of our state,” he added.
Kwankwaso attributed past developmental strides in Kano to consistent policy direction and the ideological foundation of the NNPP. He assured that elected and appointed NNPP officials would continue to pursue people-oriented policies across the board.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, former Kano State Attorney General, Barrister Haruna Falali, and Salisu Abubakar Shata expressed regret over what they described as betrayal and misdirection within their former camp.
They pledged allegiance to the Kwankwasiyya movement and voiced confidence in Kwankwaso’s ability to steer the country towards meaningful change and national development.
