Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Reverend Dr. John Joseph Hayab, has called on religious leaders and institutions to actively promote peace, justice, and national unity across Nigeria.
Speaking at the 10th Authentic News Daily Annual Lecture and Awards held at Arewa House, Kaduna, Hayab said religion, when practiced in its true form, fosters values such as compassion, forgiveness, love, and equity. He cited the teachings of Jesus Christ, which emphasize peacebuilding, empathy, and reconciliation, as a guide for religious conduct in nation-building.
The CAN chairman urged faith-based communities to discourage divisive rhetoric and instead advocate reconciliation and mutual respect, stressing that religion should serve as a unifying force rather than a tool for conflict.
Hayab also underscored the critical role of women and youths in shaping national development, describing them as agents of transformation who must be empowered to contribute meaningfully to the country’s progress.
“There can be no lasting peace where injustice thrives,” he said, calling on government at all levels to uphold fairness, protect the vulnerable, and ensure the rule of law prevails. He added that leadership must be rooted in integrity and service to the people, not power.
The event, themed “Religion as a Tool for Peace and National Unity,” attracted religious leaders, civil society actors, and other stakeholders, and aimed to highlight the role of faith in addressing Nigeria’s socio-political challenges.
Hayab’s message comes at a time when the country faces growing calls for cohesion and national healing in the face of persistent insecurity and division.
