The Chairman of the Taraba State Board of Internal Revenue, Retired Brigadier General Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa, has called for the institutionalisation of the Kefas Medium Tennis Competition as an annual event to promote sports development and youth engagement in the state.
Faransa made the call in Wukari during the Southern Taraba Median Tennis Competition organised by the Kefas Agbu Campaign Organisation. The event brought together several tennis clubs from across the region, showcasing emerging talents and fostering competitive spirit among participants.
Commending the standard of play and the discipline exhibited by the athletes, the retired military officer emphasised the importance of such tournaments in identifying and nurturing young talents capable of representing Taraba at national and international levels.
He lauded the Wukari Tennis Club for its role in producing accomplished players, including Coach Bulus and Joel Adi Gani, noting that Wukari remains the cradle of tennis in the state. He also paid tribute to the pioneer known as “Scarface,” credited with introducing tennis to the area, and underscored the need to preserve his legacy.
Faransa called for the renovation and upgrade of tennis facilities in Wukari to meet modern standards, saying such improvements would position the town as a hub for future tournaments while also contributing to the local economy.
He expressed confidence in the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas, applauding the governor’s commitment to sports development. He suggested that the Wukari Tennis Club be developed into a training centre to engage youths productively, thereby reducing social vices and fostering regional unity through sports.
