The Bauchi State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management has taken decisive steps to tackle the increasing threat of fire disasters in the state by organizing a stakeholders’ forum aimed at finding effective solutions.
The forum, which brought together representatives from federal and state fire services, security agencies, government bodies, civil society organizations, market associations, and the media, sought to leverage collective expertise in developing strategies to reduce the frequency and impact of fire outbreaks.
In her opening remarks, Hajiya Hajara Yakubu Wanka, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to tackling fire disasters. She emphasized that while it may not be possible to completely prevent such incidents, comprehensive public awareness campaigns can significantly reduce their occurrence.
“We cannot completely eliminate fire disasters, but through awareness campaigns, we can help the public understand precautionary measures and how to respond to such emergencies,” Wanka said. “This collaborative effort will help us develop realistic and workable strategies for managing fire risks in Bauchi State.”
The Commissioner further assured stakeholders that Governor Bala Mohammed is fully supportive of the initiative and is committed to implementing the solutions proposed.
Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam, the State Commissioner for Health, commended the initiative, noting that fire disasters often result in serious health consequences due to the trauma victims experience. He pledged the full support of his ministry in efforts to reduce fire risks in the state.
During the forum, stakeholders identified several challenges, including inadequate public awareness, lack of fire-fighting equipment, limited access to disaster-stricken areas, substandard electrical wiring, and the absence of emergency contact numbers.
The stakeholder meeting marks a critical step in enhancing the state’s capacity to manage fire emergencies and foster a culture of safety and resilience in local communities.
