The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 17 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud in Kwara State, in a continued crackdown on cybercrime.
Arrests Made in Coordinated Raids Across Ilorin, Ifelodun
According to a statement from the EFCC, the suspects were apprehended during intelligence-driven operations conducted in key areas of Ilorin and the Ifelodun Local Government Area. The targeted locations included Asa Dam, the Al-Hikmah University axis, Gaa-Odota, Ganmo, and Amoyo.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, confirmed that the arrests were based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to various forms of online scams.
“Our operatives acted on actionable intelligence that traced the suspects to cybercrime activities within the state,” Oyewale said.
Items Recovered: Luxury Vehicles, Gadgets
The EFCC disclosed that items recovered from the suspects include three luxury vehicles, sophisticated smartphones, and several laptops allegedly used in fraudulent operations.
This operation comes less than a week after 47 similar arrests were made in Ilorin and nearby communities, pointing to what authorities describe as a growing trend of cybercrime in the region.
Prosecution to Follow
Oyewale added that the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The EFCC has ramped up efforts nationwide to combat internet-related fraud, particularly among young Nigerians. The agency continues to urge the public to report suspicious cyber activities and support its fight against financial crimes.
