The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with a deadly attack stemming from renewed clashes between farmers and herders in Bandawa-Munga Dosso communities, Karim Lamido Local Council of the state.
A statement issued by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), James Lashen Saminu, on Friday, revealed that the suspects were part of a group that launched an assault on Wuro Guga, near Jen, believed to be a meeting point for Fulani herders. The attack, which occurred on May 14, left at least 10 people dead.
The police said the arrest followed a swift operation by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the 40 Police Mobile Force, working in conjunction with officers from the Karim Lamido Division, under the leadership of CSP Ayuba Yohanna. The team acted on credible intelligence regarding the activities of the group.
During the operation, the suspects were allegedly found setting fire to huts abandoned by Fulani residents who fled during the violence.
A cache of weapons was recovered at the scene, including one locally made revolver pistol, one locally made revolver gun, four single-barrel guns, and nine cartridges.
Lashen noted that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects, adding that security measures are being put in place to restore peace and stability in the affected communities.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Emmanuel Bretet Simon, commended the officers for their professionalism and resilience, stressing the command’s commitment to upholding law and order.
Simon also issued a stern warning to criminal elements, including miscreants, dissidents, and troublemakers, to desist from unlawful acts or face the full weight of the law.
