Crystal Palace on Saturday made history by winning their first major trophy, defeating Manchester City 1-0 in a dramatic FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
The lone goal of the match came in the 64th minute, when Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home past City goalkeeper Ederson. The goal was enough to secure a famous victory and send the Palace fans into jubilation.
City, who had been chasing silverware on multiple fronts this season, dominated possession but were unable to break through a resolute Palace defence marshalled by centre-back Joachim Andersen. The result marks Pep Guardiola’s first trophyless season since taking charge of Manchester City in 2016.
“This is a dream come true,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner. “I’m proud of the players, the staff, and the fans. We showed character, discipline, and belief. To win our first major trophy against a team like Manchester City makes it even more special.”
City manager Guardiola acknowledged Palace’s strong performance. “They defended very well and took their chance,” he said. “We had opportunities, but football is about scoring goals, and today we couldn’t.”
Crystal Palace’s journey to the final included wins over top-flight opponents, showcasing the team’s growing confidence under Glasner’s leadership. The FA Cup victory is expected to usher in a new era of ambition for the club.
The result also throws City’s season into sharp relief, having missed out on the Premier League title, the UEFA Champions League, and now the FA Cup.
Palace will now look forward to a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League, marking another significant step forward for the club.
