Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday held a closed-door meeting with former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, at his Ilesa residence, in what sources described as part of ongoing consultations to build a new political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, who was accompanied by former Vice President Namadi Sambo, is reportedly reaching out to key political figures amid rising discontent within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior under President Muhammadu Buhari, has recently hinted at the possibility of aligning with a new political movement. His fallout with President Bola Tinubu in the run-up to the 2022 Osun governorship election has remained a point of political tension within the APC.
Welcoming Atiku at the meeting were some of Aregbesola’s long-time allies, including former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salam, and former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti.
A source close to the meeting told Daily Times that the visit was “more than a courtesy call” and described it as “a strategic consultation ahead of a broader alliance.”
The visit comes ahead of the coronation ceremony of the new Owa of Ijesaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, which both politicians are expected to attend.
Political analysts say the meeting could signal the beginning of a major coalition realignment that may reshape the 2027 electoral landscape.
