The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano Local Government Area following an attack on the police division by irate youths.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident was triggered by the arrest of one Abdullahi Musa, a motorcycle mechanic allegedly under the influence of intoxicants. He was apprehended on May 25 for reportedly riding recklessly and endangering public safety.
The statement noted that the suspect, after being taken into custody, showed signs of physical weakness and was immediately rushed to the Rano General Hospital, where he died in the early hours of May 26 while receiving medical attention.
In response to the incident, a mob of angry youths launched an attack on the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the station and two patrol vehicles ablaze, vandalising ten additional vehicles, and fatally injuring the DPO.
SP Kiyawa confirmed that 27 individuals have so far been arrested in connection with the unrest, adding that calm has since been restored to the area.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, CP Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene of the attack and paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar (Autan Bawo 19). He assured the traditional institution and residents of a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Command deeply regrets the loss of a senior officer who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. We urge members of the public to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their hands, and allow the investigation to run its full course,” the statement read in part.
CP Bakori reiterated the Command’s resolve to uphold law and order and assured that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
The Command also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased officer and restated its commitment to maintaining peace, safety, and accountability in all parts of the state.
