In a determined effort to strengthen research capacity and promote data-driven decision-making in Nigeria, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has concluded a three-day intensive training for 25 professionals on data analysis using Python programming.
The initiative, which represents the second phase of CITAD’s ongoing data capacity-building programme, drew participants from academic institutions, postgraduate students, civil society organisations (CSOs), and public sector agencies across the country.
Speaking at the closing session of the training held in Kano, the Executive Director of CITAD, Engr. Yunusa Ya’u—represented by Hamza Ibrahim, Senior Programme Officer in the Research and Communications Unit—said the training is part of the Centre’s strategic effort to build a data-literate workforce capable of supporting research, educational development, and public policy formulation.
“We initiated this programme to address the growing demand for data competency across sectors. Reliable data is crucial not only for academic research but also for crafting effective public policies and programmes,” he said.
According to him, the programme received over 10,000 applications, reflecting the increasing interest in data skills.
“After a rigorous selection process, we shortlisted 25 professionals for this second phase, continuing from where the first batch ended.”
Engr. Ya’u also decried the prevailing data gaps within many institutions, noting that poor data quality often results in ineffective policymaking.
“This initiative is our way of bridging that gap and ensuring that professionals across sectors have the tools and knowledge to interpret and use data meaningfully,” he added.
CITAD’s training programme is expected to significantly enhance research quality and evidence-based decision-making across key sectors of national development, including education, governance, and civil society engagement.
