Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Abu Kefas, has declared that his administration has laid a new and lasting foundation for development, peace, and inclusive governance in the state over the last two years.
Speaking in Jalingo at an event marking the second anniversary of his administration, the governor said his tenure so far has been defined by deliberate action, tough decisions, and people-centered reforms — especially in security, education, infrastructure, civil service reform, and rural development.
He described his government’s approach as one that prioritizes results over rhetoric, asserting that while perfection was never promised, purposeful leadership has been delivered.
“We have made visible progress. But more importantly, we have built a foundation — intentionally and with the people at the center of it all,” he said.
Security and Stability
Governor Kefas recalled the atmosphere of insecurity that preceded his assumption of office in 2023, including an aborted attack on a top government official just days before inauguration. That incident, among others, he said, strengthened the administration’s resolve to tackle insecurity head-on.
He said his government has since invested heavily in logistics, surveillance, and community-based security strategies, including the procurement of 151 new vehicles and the rehabilitation of 133 others for police, fire service, and other emergency agencies. Military forward operating bases have been established in strategic border communities, he added.
Infrastructure Rebirth
Highlighting achievements in infrastructure, the governor said his administration has completed 12 major market projects that were abandoned by past governments, alongside critical public facilities.
He cited the construction of the multi-billion-naira TY Danjuma House, which now serves as the state’s administrative hub and is regarded as the most modern state government facility in Northern Nigeria.
Other key projects include the nearly completed School of Nursing, the newly built trailer park to reduce highway congestion, and a major upgrade to the College of Health Technology, which previously operated below standard.
Revamping Education
Governor Kefas announced that basic education is now free and compulsory across the state, and the government has also paid for WAEC and NECO examinations for all public school students.
Over 60 modern schools are currently under construction as part of a pilot education reform project, while students have received uniforms, footwear, books, digital tablets, and other learning materials.
“My standard for our children is not what we inherited. It is what we must build — a better tomorrow,” he said.
Civil Service and Economic Reform
On workers’ welfare, the governor stated that Taraba is one of the first three states in the country to fully implement the new national minimum wage. Salaries are now paid regularly, and morale across the civil service has improved due to reforms in recruitment, training, and promotion practices.
He said over 225 youths have been trained abroad in partnership with private investors, and more public-private innovation programmes are underway to create jobs and enhance productivity.
In agriculture, he said, the government is supporting farmers with access to mechanisation, irrigation facilities, inputs, and extension services.
Health, Governance, and Climate Action
On health, the governor disclosed that his administration has introduced a 50% subsidy for medical care for children, restored key facilities, and improved access to healthcare delivery across rural areas.
He also confirmed that local government autonomy has been restored through democratic elections and financial devolution, with a renewed focus on service delivery at the grassroots.
The state is also addressing the impact of climate change through reforestation, erosion control, and sustainable land use practices.
Personal Reflection and Commitment
Governor Kefas took a personal moment during his address to reflect on the loss of his sister, Aisha, who died from gunshot wounds under unclear circumstances. He confirmed that investigations are ongoing, stressing that his administration would continue to prioritize justice and safety for all citizens.
“This journey has come with personal sacrifice. But we are not here for applause. We are here for legacy,” he declared.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, the governor unveiled plans to integrate artificial intelligence across governance systems, develop rural electrification initiatives, and establish special economic zones to position Taraba as a hub for business and innovation.
He reiterated his commitment to transparent governance, saying all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have been placed on performance reporting systems.
“Let us rise together. Let us believe again. It is time to unlock the doors of opportunity and spread our wings beyond the limits of yesterday,” he said.
Governor Kefas concluded his address by thanking development partners including the World Bank, the United Nations, and other stakeholders who have supported the state’s development agenda.
