In a gesture of solidarity and compassion, the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has donated ₦31 million to the families of 22 athletes and officials from Kano State who lost their lives in a tragic motor accident. The victims were returning from the National Sports Festival, which was recently hosted in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The unfortunate accident, which happened on their way back to Kano, claimed 22 lives and left several others seriously injured. The tragedy has plunged many homes into mourning and drawn sympathy from across the country.
A delegation from the Ogun State Government, led by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, visited Kano on Sunday to deliver the governor’s condolence message and financial support to the bereaved families.
The delegation included top government officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi; the Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Wasiu Isiaka; and the Executive Secretary of the Local Organising Committee of the Sports Festival, Dr. Kweku Tandoh.
Speaking during the visit, Deputy Governor Salako-Oyedele said the ₦31 million donation was not meant to replace the lost lives, but to offer some support and show that the people of Ogun State share in Kano’s grief.
“We came here not only to deliver this assistance, but to let you know that we are mourning with you. This is a national loss, not just for Kano,” she said.
She also commended the efforts of emergency responders and health workers who acted swiftly during the incident, and prayed for the quick recovery of those still receiving treatment.
Receiving the Ogun delegation, Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdusalam Gwarzo, expressed sincere appreciation for the visit and the donation. He described the gesture as heartfelt and timely.
“This support shows true brotherhood. We appreciate Governor Abiodun and the entire Ogun people for remembering us during this difficult time,” Gwarzo said.
The Kano State Government had earlier promised to support the affected families and has since declared a period of mourning in honour of the departed athletes and officials.
