Police launch manhunt after deadly attack on mining site in Oreke-Okeigbo

Gunmen have killed two police officers and abducted two workers, including a Chinese national, during an attack on a mining site in the Oreke-Okeigbo community of Kwara State.
The incident occurred around 6:30pm on Tuesday, June 4, 2025, sparking fear among residents in the area.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
According to the statement, the assailants stormed the mining site, opened fire on security personnel, and killed two officers—Assistant Superintendent of Police Haruna Watsai and Inspector Tukur Ogah. Both men were attached to the 45 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Abuja. Their service rifles were taken by the attackers.

After the shooting, the gunmen abducted two workers: Mr. Sam Xie Wie, a Chinese national, and Mr. David Adenaiye, a Nigerian citizen from Kogi State.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Adekimi Ojo, condemned the killings and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and apprehend those responsible.
“This is a tragic and unacceptable act. We have deployed tactical teams and are working with other security agencies and local stakeholders to ensure the safe release of the victims and that justice is served,” Ojo said.
He called on members of the public to remain calm and urged them to support security agencies with credible information.
“This unfortunate event will not deter our efforts to protect lives and property across the state,” he added.
The police said further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
