Chairman of Kurmi LGA, Hon. Moses Maihankali, says his focus is on people-centered governance and sustainable rural development—not political power.

The Executive Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Area, Hon. Moses Maihankali, has said he is not driven by a thirst for political power, but by a strong desire to leave behind a lasting and meaningful legacy at the grassroots.
Maihankali stated this during a stakeholders’ engagement on rural development held at the council secretariat in Baissa, the administrative headquarters of Kurmi LGA.
“I am not desperate for power, but I am eager to leave a meaningful and lasting legacy at the grassroots level,” he told the gathering, which included traditional rulers, youth leaders, civil society organisations, and local officials.

The chairman noted that true leadership is about service delivery and accountability, especially in rural areas where development has long been neglected.
“We are not here for showmanship or politics as usual. Our focus is on delivering projects that directly touch the lives of our people—roads, water, schools, and healthcare,” he said.
Ongoing Projects and Development Focus
Since assuming office, Maihankali’s administration has undertaken key infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of feeder roads linking farming communities to markets, the drilling of solar-powered boreholes in water-scarce areas, and the renovation of dilapidated primary schools and health centres.
He said, “You cannot talk about development without first addressing the basic needs of the people. We are tackling these challenges head-on.”
The chairman also disclosed that his government has concluded plans to launch an empowerment programme for youth and women, particularly in agriculture and small-scale businesses.
“If our young people are meaningfully engaged, they won’t have to migrate to cities to survive. We must make Kurmi a place of opportunity, not abandonment,” he said.

Community Involvement Crucial
Maihankali appealed for cooperation from residents, noting that development is a shared responsibility.
“We want to work hand in hand with community leaders, religious institutions, and youth groups. Without unity, government efforts will not yield the desired results,” he added.
Alhaji Idris Danlami, a traditional leader from the Ndaforo community, commended the chairman for what he described as “a leadership style rooted in humility and consultation.”
“For the first time in years, we are being listened to and involved in decision-making,” Danlami said.
Challenges Remain
Despite the efforts, residents say more still needs to be done in the areas of education, healthcare staffing, and road expansion.
Ngozi Patrick, a civil society activist, urged the chairman to prioritize transparency and follow-through.
“There is progress, no doubt. But what matters is sustaining it. We will continue to hold the government accountable,” she said.

Kurmi Local Government Area is located in southern Taraba and is one of the most diverse LGAs in the state, with a largely agrarian population. Despite its rich cultural and natural resources, the area faces infrastructural deficits and poor access to basic services.
