No fewer than 118 children have been vaccinated against polio in Hayin Madara, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as part of efforts to tackle vaccine resistance in rural communities.
The exercise was carried out by the Journalists Initiative on Immunization Against Polio (JAP) in collaboration with the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board and the World Health Organization.

As part of the campaign, JAP organised road shows and local drama performances to sensitise residents in settlements known for high levels of non-compliance.
The creative approach drew crowds and provided a chance for health workers to reach children who had never received any vaccines, also known as zero-dose children.
Speaking during the exercise, the District Head of Giwa, Alhaji Aminu Abdulkarim Aminu, warned parents against refusing vaccines for their children.
“Vaccination is for the good of our children. No responsible parent should deny their child protection from diseases,” he said.

He added that JAP and its partners have spent over 15 years working in high-risk areas to boost awareness through community engagement and advocacy.
Although Nigeria was declared free of wild polio virus in 2020, health officials say campaigns like this are necessary to maintain that status and prevent outbreaks in vulnerable areas.
