The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday launched a public awareness campaign on tanker explosions and fire incidents in Taraba and Adamawa states.
The campaign, held in Jalingo, was targeted at truck and tanker drivers and aimed at reducing the growing number of fire outbreaks linked to petroleum tankers in the region.

Director General of NEMA, Hajia Zubaida Umar, who was represented by the Head of Search and Rescue at the Yola Operations Office, Mr. Giwa Kurutsi, said the campaign was necessary in view of the dangers tanker accidents pose to lives, property and the environment.
“It is critical to acknowledge that tanker accidents not only endanger the lives of those directly involved but also pose significant risks to communities and the environment,” she said.
According to her, the initiative would feature workshops, community outreaches, and training sessions focused on fire prevention, emergency response, and communication strategies.
Assistant Controller of the Federal Fire Service in Taraba, Yakubu Fungus, urged drivers to adhere to safety regulations and traffic laws, adding that the service remains fully prepared to respond to fire outbreaks.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Taraba State branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Alhaji Dahiru Modibbo, appealed to the Federal Government to rehabilitate major roads and reduce the number of checkpoints along highways.
He noted that the union discourages members from handing over vehicles to drunk drivers and commended NEMA for the sensitisation effort.

Also speaking, a representative of the National Association of Transport Owners (NATO), Alhaji Ahmed Isa, called on Governor Agbu Kefas to complete the trailer park project in Jalingo, noting that Taraba is the only state in the region without such a facility.
He said the parking of heavy-duty trucks along highways continues to endanger other road users.
The campaign was attended by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Red Cross, Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and other stakeholders.
