At least four people were killed and 21 others injured on Friday when a vehicle ran over a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along the Katarko-Goniri Road in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The victims, mostly traders, were reportedly on their way to the popular Buniyadi market when their vehicle triggered the explosive. The incident occurred in the Gotala community, located on the fringes of the Sambisa forest, a known hideout of Boko Haram insurgents.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion happened just a day after a similar incident involving vigilantes and military vehicles along the same route. Several people were said to have been either killed or injured in that earlier blast, although the military is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incidents.

The bodies of the four deceased victims have been taken to their respective communities for burial, while those injured are currently receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital and the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.

In the wake of the attack, grieving relatives and concerned residents have called on the Yobe State Government to urgently rehabilitate the dilapidated Katarko-Goniri road. They warned that the poor state of the road continues to expose both civilians and security forces stationed in nearby Goniri to attacks by insurgents.
The Gotala community remains tense as residents fear further attacks, urging authorities to increase security surveillance in the area.
