Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has officially resigned as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing health challenges that have affected his ability to lead the party effectively.

“The Chairman has been battling health challenges for some time, and it reached a point where he could no longer continue,” a senior party official told reporters in Abuja.

Ganduje assumed office in August 2023, following the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu. His tenure was marked by internal party disputes, allegations of mismanagement, and ongoing criticism of his leadership style—factors some party insiders believe may have contributed to his deteriorating health.

Although the resignation was made public on Friday, sources say top figures within the party had been aware of his condition for weeks and had begun informal discussions about succession.

In the interim, Senator Basiru has taken over party affairs to ensure continuity. The APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to convene in the coming days to deliberate on appointing a substantive replacement.

One of the leading names being considered is Senator Tanko Al-Makura, a former governor of Nasarawa State. Party insiders describe Al-Makura as a unifying figure who could help stabilise the APC as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Ganduje has yet to issue a public statement regarding his resignation. However, political analysts suggest that the move could mark a significant shift in the party’s internal dynamics and strategy moving forward.
