In a major push for improved hygiene education in schools, 42 students across 21 schools in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have been inaugurated as Hygiene Quest Ambassadors under a new initiative by Dettol Nigeria in partnership with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA).
The inauguration, held Wednesday in Omu-Aran, marked the official launch of Hygiene Quest Clubs in selected primary and secondary schools. The programme aims to promote sustainable hygiene practices and behavioural change through peer-led health advocacy.

Speaking at the event, WBFA’s Director of Programming, Mr. Williams Awotunde—represented by the organisation’s National Programmes Manager, Mr. Kehinde Akinsola—said the initiative is designed as a long-term intervention to build healthier school communities.
“This is not just a workshop—it’s a commitment to developing young leaders who will drive behavioural change in their schools and local communities,” he said.
Under the initiative, the student ambassadors will lead weekly school-based activities focused on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), including hygiene campaigns, peer education, and hand-washing demonstrations.
Representing the Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, Deputy Director Mr. Yisa Joshua described the programme as timely and relevant.
“This initiative goes beyond promoting cleanliness. It instils leadership, responsibility, and service among our young people,” he said.
The Education Secretary of Irepodun LGA, Mr. Razaq Ojewoye, also commended the programme, stressing the connection between health and academic performance.
“We often say health is wealth. Today, we are giving our children both,” he noted.
In support of the clubs, each of the participating schools received hand-washing workstations to reinforce the hygiene training and encourage regular practice.
A spelling bee competition was also held as part of the launch, with winners emerging in both primary and secondary categories. These students will advance to represent their schools in upcoming inter-school competitions across Kwara State.

The Hygiene Quest campaign, led by WBFA in collaboration with Dettol (a Reckitt brand), is part of a broader effort to equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and leadership skills to promote public health from within their schools and communities.
