The Gombe State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old man for possession of counterfeit United States currency at the Gombe International Airport.
The suspect, identified as Usman Kawu, a resident of Kuji Kwadon village in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area, was apprehended on Friday, June 28, 2025, at about 2:04 p.m. by operatives attached to the Lawanti Airport Division.

In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, police recovered ten pieces of suspected fake $100 bills, equivalent to ₦1.5 million, from the suspect. An additional ₦10,000 in Nigerian currency was also discovered concealed in his inner shorts.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect intended to use the counterfeit notes to defraud unsuspecting individuals within the airport premises.

According to DSP Abdullahi, the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation but claimed the counterfeit currency was given to him by an accomplice, whose identity is currently being withheld.
“The Command is intensifying efforts to apprehend the said accomplice and recover further evidence,” the statement read.
