In a renewed push for food security and economic development in Nigeria, Hajiya Halima Zubairu Danbatta—former Kano State House of Assembly candidate and chairperson of the Nigerian Cassava Farmers Growers Association, Kano State Chapter—has stressed the transformative potential of cassava production in empowering women and youth.
During a recent visit to cassava seedling banks in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, Hajiya Halima underscored the vital role cassava can play in boosting Nigeria’s economy, alleviating youth restiveness, and reducing unemployment.

“Cassava production can be a game-changer for our economy and our youths,” she said. “If our youths can fully engage in cassava production, it will not only boost our economy but also take them out of restiveness.”
Hajiya Halima called on both federal and state governments to provide cassava farmers with access to soft loans and modern mechanized equipment, which she said are crucial for increasing productivity and improving the quality of cassava products.
“We need the government’s support to take our cassava production to the next level,” she emphasized. “With the right tools and resources, we can increase our yield and meet both local and international demand.”
She also highlighted the importance of empowering women in agriculture, particularly in cassava farming, noting their indispensable role in achieving food security.
“Women are the backbone of our society, and their involvement in cassava production is essential for our food security,” she said. “We need to encourage more women to get involved and provide them with the necessary support and resources.”
According to Hajiya Halima, cassava farming holds immense potential for job creation and economic growth, especially through its export opportunities and industrial applications.
“Cassava production can generate employment opportunities for our youths and contribute to our economic growth. We need to tap into this potential and create an enabling environment for cassava farmers to thrive,” she stated.
She commended the Kano State government for its ongoing efforts in promoting cassava cultivation and urged for sustained investment and policy support.
“Kano State has made significant progress in cassava production. With the right policies and continued support, we can turn Kano into a hub for cassava production in Nigeria,” she added.
Hajiya Halima outlined several benefits of cassava, including its versatility in food and industrial use, its potential to reduce poverty, and its role in enhancing food self-sufficiency. However, she pointed to persistent challenges faced by cassava farmers, particularly the lack of access to financing and modern farming tools.

In closing, she called for urgent government intervention to address these challenges and elevate cassava farming as a strategic sector in Nigeria’s economic roadmap.
“We need to prioritize cassava production and provide the necessary support to farmers. With the right policies and support, we can make cassava a major driver of our economy and improve the lives of our people,” she concluded.
