The Taraba State Police Command has accused the Chairman of Gassol Local Government Council, Hon. Abubakar Saidu, of spreading falsehood and raising unnecessary alarm over an alleged kidnap attempt on his life.
In a press statement issued in Jalingo on Sunday, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, James Lashen Saminu, described the claim made by the Chairman as “fake, misleading, and without any evidence.” The Command stated that the report was not only baseless but seemed aimed at discrediting the efforts of security operatives in maintaining peace within the state capital.

According to the police, Hon. Saidu had contacted the GRA Division on July 10, 2025, around 3:15 a.m., claiming that he had observed suspicious movements around his residence near Algon House in Jalingo.
However, the PPRO stated that upon swift response by the Divisional Police Officer and his patrol team, no suspects or criminal activity were found at the scene. Further investigation also failed to substantiate the Chairman’s claims.
“There was no trace of any suspicious persons or attempt to break into his residence that could constitute the offence of attempted kidnap,” the police said.
Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Simon Bretet, reassured residents that the Command remains vigilant and fully committed to the protection of lives and property. He emphasized that Jalingo has remained free of kidnapping incidents in the last one year, attributing the success to collaborative efforts between the government and security agencies.
The alleged false alarm by Hon. Saidu has drawn sharp criticism from members of the public. A resident of Jalingo’s GRA area, Jonathan Bulus, called on the police to take legal action against the Chairman.

“I think the Chairman’s intention is to undermine the good work of Governor Agbu Kefas, who has been relentless in eradicating crime in the state. We’ve had peace here for over a year,” Bulus stated.
The controversy adds to existing scrutiny on Hon. Abubakar Saidu, who has recently been in the spotlight over allegations of employment racketeering and other questionable practices within his office.
