Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, has signed into law the bill establishing the University of Tropical Agriculture, Science and Technology, and Climate Action, Gembu.
The signing took place at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo during a brief ceremony attended by top government officials and members of the Taraba State House of Assembly.

Kefas, while speaking shortly after assenting to the bill, commended the state legislature for its continued support since the inception of his administration. He described Sardauna Local Government Area, where the university will be sited, as the “heartbeat” of Taraba, citing its strategic location and rich natural endowments.
He said the institution was conceived to harness the area’s unique climatic, hydrological, and environmental assets, and to draw both national and international attention to the region’s untapped potential.
“This initiative will help expose the hidden beauty of our region and position Taraba as a hub for tropical agricultural research and climate innovation,” the governor stated.
Kefas directed the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mike Dio Jen, to liaise with relevant stakeholders and the local government council to identify a temporary site for the university’s immediate take-off.
He also expressed optimism that the university would enhance cross-border relations with neighbouring Cameroon, especially in trade and regional cooperation, and attract more federal presence to the area.

Earlier, the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Kizito Bonzena, disclosed that the bill was jointly sponsored by the three lawmakers representing constituencies within Sardauna LGA.
He added that the initiative aligns with the governor’s development blueprint, known as the Five Finger Prints agenda.
