Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a father figure, an honest leader, and a true patriot who served Nigeria with deep commitment.
In a heartfelt message following Buhari’s death, Gambo said the former president’s passing is a great loss not only to his family but to the entire country.

“With a deeply saddened heart and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, I pay tribute to a towering figure in our national history,” he said. “He was more than a leader—he was a father and mentor.”
Gambo served as Chief of Naval Staff from 2021 to 2023 after being appointed by Buhari. He said working under the former president was one of the greatest honours of his career.
He recalled Buhari’s last major military outing, the Nigerian Navy’s Presidential Fleet Review in Lagos in 2023, saying the event reflected the former president’s strong connection to the armed forces.
“In him, I found not just a Commander-in-Chief, but a father figure—firm but fair, deeply principled, and committed to the growth of the military,” Gambo said.
He also praised Buhari’s leadership qualities, especially his simplicity, discipline, and concern for the poor.
“In a world driven by selfish interests, Buhari stood firm on the path of truth and service,” Gambo added. “His modest lifestyle and transparent way of governance set an example for leaders today and in the future.”
Sharing a personal memory, Gambo said his late mother was one of Buhari’s biggest admirers and was overjoyed when her son was appointed to serve under him.
“She was proud to meet him in person after he left office,” he said. “She joins millions of Nigerians who mourn him today.”

Gambo concluded his tribute with prayers for Buhari’s soul and comfort for his family.
“Though he is no longer with us physically, his legacy will remain. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give strength to all those he left behind.”
