The Taraba State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has disbursed over ₦140 million as welfare support to families of deceased members and retired workers over the past 17 months.
The State President of NULGE, Comrade Baji Wakili Damuga, disclosed this during a special event in Zing local government Secretariat on Thursday to commemorate the union’s welfare achievements.

According to Damuga, the union’s welfare scheme has benefited over 714 individuals across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state and the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), with each beneficiary receiving ₦200,000.
He said the initiative was made possible by the consistent payment of salaries by the state government, led by Governor Agbu Kefas.
“This milestone was made possible through the consistent payment of salaries by the Taraba State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Taraba State,” he said.
The NULGE president explained that the welfare scheme was initially introduced under former President Comrade Obidah Bitrus, with a monthly deduction of ₦100 from members’ salaries. The scheme was later expanded under successive administrations.
Under the late Comrade Nathali Kefas, disbursements rose to ₦30,000 for families of deceased members and ₦50,000 for retirees. Comrade Yakubu Tanko Burba, while serving as Acting President, further increased the benefits to ₦80,000 and ₦100,000 respectively.
Under his current leadership, the union now offers a flat-rate ₦200,000 benefit to both categories of beneficiaries.

Damuga urged members to remain committed to the scheme, describing their monthly contributions as an investment in their own future.
He also encouraged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds, whether to start small businesses or support the education of their families.
“We will continue to ensure that outstanding beneficiaries are promptly attended to. NULGE remains committed to the welfare of its members,” he said.
