The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced the commencement of compulsory hepatitis screening for all food handlers across the nation’s capital.
The directive affects food vendors and workers operating in restaurants, markets, bakeries, canteens, and other food-related businesses within the FCT.

According to the FCTA, the move is aimed at strengthening public health surveillance and reducing the risk of hepatitis A and B transmission, particularly through food contamination and poor hygiene practices.
In an official statement, the administration emphasized that food handlers must undergo screening and present medical clearance certificates issued by recognized public health facilities.
“This policy is a preventive measure to ensure food safety and protect the health of residents. It will be strictly monitored by the relevant health authorities,” the statement said.
The screening exercise is expected to be enforced by the FCT Department of Public Health, with routine inspections and follow-ups. Food business operators who fail to comply face penalties including sanctions, closure of premises, and possible license revocation.
