Shock and outrage have gripped residents of Karofi, a suburb of Jalingo, Taraba State capital, after an Adviser to Governor Agbu Kefas allegedly attacked and inflicted severe knife injuries on a 19-year-old mentally challenged teenager identified as Adamu.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, was said to have started when a night security guard at a pure water factory, identified as Tapawa, apprehended Adamu inside the premises and tied him with ropes, accusing him of theft.

Our correspondent gathered that the owner of the factory, Alhaji Bello Kasimu, who also serves as one of Gov. Kefas’ advisers and a chairmanship aspirant in the forthcoming Jalingo Local Government elections, was alerted by the guard.
On arriving at the scene, Kasimu allegedly opened the boot of his vehicle, brought out a sharp knife, and repeatedly stabbed Adamu, branding him a thief, despite pleas from onlookers.
A human rights activist in the area, Gambo Dauda, told The NIGERIAN NEWSPOINTER that his investigation confirmed Adamu to be mentally unstable and known by residents of Karofi as a harmless lunatic who had been roaming the streets for months.
“We received a call from residents and rushed to the scene. We saw the victim with deep cuts all over his body. The guard himself admitted that he tied Adamu after catching him around 3 a.m., but found nothing on him. The boss (Kasimu) came and began stabbing him with a knife,” Dauda alleged.
He added that the police later rescued the victim and rushed him to the Police Clinic in Jalingo, where he is receiving treatment.

According to Dauda, he petitioned for the case to be transferred from Karofi Police Outpost to the Jalingo Police Division for proper investigation.
A senior police officer, who confirmed the development, told The NIGERIAN NEWSPOINTER that Kasimu was invited for questioning, his statement obtained, and subsequently released on bail.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Taraba State Command for official comments proved abortive as his phone lines were switched off at press time.
When contacted, Kasimu initially requested two hours to respond to the allegations but later ignored several calls put across to him by our correspondent.
The brutal attack has sparked outrage among Karofi residents, who condemned the action and demanded justice for the victim.
“This is man’s inhumanity to man. We know Adamu very well; he is mentally challenged and has never stolen anything,” said Junaidu, a resident of Karofi.
Meanwhile, rights groups in Jalingo are reportedly mounting pressure on the police to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the assault.
