The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Abner Shittu, winner of the Karim I State Constituency by-election in Taraba State, held on Saturday.

Shittu polled a total of 5,901 votes to defeat his closest rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, who scored 5,527 votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate came third with 2,069 votes, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) finished fourth with just 106 votes in what was widely described as a tightly contested election.
The by-election followed the resignation of Mr. Dio Jen, who vacated his seat in the State Assembly after his appointment as Commissioner and member of the Taraba State Executive Council.
The outcome is seen as a major political upset in Taraba, a state that has been under uninterrupted PDP control since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. Observers say the APC’s victory in Karim I could signal the beginning of the end of PDP’s political dominance in the state.
