The Kwara State Government has pledged to prioritise the education of Fulani herders’ children as part of efforts to curb insecurity and promote peaceful coexistence.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by his Special Adviser on Strategy, Abdulsalam Atiku, disclosed this at a security meeting organised by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Ilorin. The meeting drew participants from across the state’s 16 local government areas.

The governor said lack of education pushes many youths into crime, adding that schools remain the best safeguard against criminal recruitment.
“When Fulani children are educated, they will not be easy recruits for criminal gangs,” Atiku said.
He explained that the government is also encouraging herders to adopt modern ranching practices to reduce recurring clashes with farmers.
“Roaming with cattle is outdated. Modern livestock management will not only improve productivity but also enhance peaceful coexistence,” he added.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Herdsmen and Community Outreach, Hajiya Aishatu Yusuf Baruten, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to peace and urged Fulani communities to cooperate with authorities.
A member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Saidu Baba, described insecurity as a nightmare to both the state and the country. He said lawmakers would continue to back security agencies through legislation.
Kwara MACBAN Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Garba, warned that insecurity was crippling herders’ livelihoods.
“If urgent steps are not taken, livestock farming may collapse in this state and beyond,” he said, urging herders to support government initiatives.
Also, the Fulani leader in Kwara, Alhaji Ojonla Mahmud, represented by Ali Muhammed Jowuro, promised the cooperation of Fulani herders with security agencies and called on communities to remain vigilant.

Earlier, MACBAN State Secretary, Abdulazeez Mohammed, said many Fulani communities, especially in Kwara South, had been deserted due to fear of abductions. He stressed that herders were often unfairly labelled as troublemakers when in reality they were also victims of violence.
“We want peace and security so that our people can return to their homes,” he said, appealing to stakeholders to rally behind government efforts to end the cycle of violence.
