…Approves Recruitment of 50 Nurses for General Hospital

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Monday inaugurated three key projects in Gwoza Local Government Area, in the southern part of the state.
The projects include the newly established Gwoza College of Nursing and Midwifery, a block of 20 modern teachers’ quarters, and 200 lock-up shops at the Gwoza Main Market.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Zulum said the projects reflected his administration’s determination to rebuild communities that had suffered the impact of insurgency and to invest in human capacity development.
According to him, the Nursing and Midwifery College was conceived to train competent health professionals who would help bridge the manpower gap in hospitals across Borno State.
He explained that the institution is equipped with modern laboratories, a well-stocked library, simulation rooms, and standard classroom furniture to meet the needs of students and lecturers.
“For years, our healthcare system suffered from a severe shortage of skilled workers, forcing us to rely on professionals from outside the state. That model was neither sustainable nor dignified. With this college, we are providing a lasting solution,” Zulum said.
The governor further noted that the block of 20 teachers’ quarters was built to address the accommodation challenges faced by teachers in Gwoza. He stressed that providing decent housing for teachers would improve their welfare and enhance the quality of education delivery in the area.
On the market shops, Zulum said the 200 newly constructed stalls would be allocated to traders to revitalise commerce in Gwoza, boost local trade, create job opportunities, and improve government revenue.
“The people of Gwoza deserve not only security but also opportunities to thrive. These market shops will give traders a conducive environment to grow their businesses and contribute to the local economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Zulum also announced the approval for the recruitment of 50 nurses for the Gwoza General Hospital. He said the recruitment was necessary to provide adequate manpower at the hospital, which will also serve as a reference point for students of the new nursing college.
The governor made the announcement when he paid homage to the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Muhammad Shehu Timta, at his palace.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Mallam Gana, commended the foresight of Governor Zulum in establishing nursing colleges in both Gwoza and Monguno. He described the initiative as a milestone in improving access to quality healthcare in Borno.
The commissioning ceremony attracted dignitaries, including Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume; House of Representatives members, Ahmad Jaha Babawo and Bukar Talba; Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Abdullahi Askira; Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani; Head of Service, Dr. Muhammad Ghuluze; Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe; and other top government functionaries.
Traditional leaders, community stakeholders, and residents of Gwoza also turned out in large numbers to witness the event, which many described as a turning point in the town’s journey towards recovery and development.
