The African Climate Reporters (ACR), a coalition of scientists, civil society organizations, and environmental advocates, has commended the Kaduna State Government for emerging third in the 2025 Nigeria Climate Governance Ranking.
In a statement issued in Kaduna, the Head of Communication and Strategies of ACR, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, attributed the achievement to Governor Uba Sani’s unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable environmental policies and promoting climate awareness across the state. He said the recognition reflected the governor’s leadership and the dedication of the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Abubakar Buba, in implementing impactful climate policies.
Yakubu described the ranking as a significant milestone, recalling that Kaduna moved from 16th position last year to third place in the current assessment—coming behind only Lagos and Katsina States. He expressed optimism that with continued commitment and collaboration, Kaduna could soon attain the top position in the country.
The ACR also commended the Pace Project Kaduna for its consistent role in public awareness, capacity building, and community engagement on environmental protection. Yakubu said such partnerships have strengthened the state’s response to the challenges of deforestation, desertification, flooding, and erosion.
He further acknowledged the contribution of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change, Hon. Yusuf Idris Amoke, for leading widespread tree-planting campaigns aimed at mitigating the effects of extreme weather and global warming. According to Yakubu, Amoke’s involvement in ACR’s monthly climate dialogue sessions has encouraged more journalists and scientists to produce reports that promote environmental sustainability.
“The partnership between government, scientists and civil society has set Kaduna on a path toward becoming one of the most environmentally responsible states in Nigeria,” Yakubu stated.

He also recognized the efforts of the Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative, NEMA, SEMA, and the Red Cross for their commitment to early warning and rapid response mechanisms that help prevent environmental disasters. Similar commendation was extended to the Interfaith Mediation Centre’s Department of Climate Change for promoting environmental stewardship through faith-based education.
Yakubu reaffirmed ACR’s commitment to supporting the Kaduna State Government in its drive for sustainable development, expressing confidence that with God’s guidance and collective effort, the state would continue to lead in climate governance and environmental innovation.
