The Bauchi State chapter of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), in collaboration with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), on Thursday conducted a cancer awareness campaign and free screening exercise in Dungal community, Bauchi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The event drew participants from the state health ministries, civil society organisations, MWAN national representatives, students and the media.
In her opening remarks, President of MWAN Bauchi, Dr Ummahani Jafaru, said the programme was part of activities marking the global Cancer Awareness Month. She encouraged women to carry out regular self-examinations and seek medical attention when necessary, noting that early detection enhances survival chances.
Dr Jafaru commended NEDC for its support and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to improving healthcare in underserved areas.
Delivering a lecture on breast and cervical cancer, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Habiba Ismail highlighted the importance of regular breast checks and prompt medical consultation. She stated that one in eight women is at risk of developing breast cancer and stressed the significance of HPV vaccination for girls aged nine to fourteen to prevent cervical cancer.
Speaking on behalf of the NEDC State Coordinator, Sulaiman Ibrahim restated the Commission’s support for health-focused initiatives. He urged women to utilise the free screening and medical consultation provided during the programme.
